day 5: presenting our worlds

After an inspiring short movie of Constant Nieuwenhuizen, the artist known for his avantgarde architectural work New Babylon the groups start off making their joined worlds.

The groups are all presented with a big sheet of brown paper that offers plenty possibilities to make a statement. Of course there is the accompanying sheet of pointers and questions, to help the creative process along.

Today we are again welcoming guests from outside IBB who will both participate and be part of the audience in the presentation.

After the presentation there will be a little celebration in the IBB garden with BBQ and juice.

  • contemporary critical minds

    Equilibrium was the starting point in their visualisation of their world. The original plans had different starting points, both negative and positive. It was their job to connect amongst all a family trail, chill palace and work unit .

  • This resulted in drawing in black and white. The total effect should balance out.
    The original plans were transformed and fitted in. The working process was easy and inspiring.

  • two worlds

    After discussing and planning quite some time they came up with the concept: two seperate worlds feeding each other. Every plan was integrated, but organised by visual similarities.

  • This resulted in a world that was both conceptually and esthetically convincing. The connective element, water streaming from mouth to hand in mouth was picturesque in the best sense of the word.


    In the big ear you whisper you wishes and the man in the hammock makes it all come true. This is the isalnd where everybody works together, transport is by bird or donkey and no problems exist.

  • That is to say, one partaker tinsisted that only peace is boring and she claimed the roca de problemas. A place where you can protest. Special here is the open only in december tunnel connection with Colombia. Not to miss out on the parties then.


    lots of good vibes and a nice trippy atmosphere. That's what the world of this group represents.

  • The devilish character in the corner is "a teacher that tells us all the time to work and not relax" this was not met by general consent: we're here to learn, not to sleep...

  • connection SHALOM

    this plan combined all previous individual plans through an intergalactic travel system. This enables the visitor to travel between the different locations where one can skate, meditate, do glamour things and do interplanetary fishing.

  • Quite something was the presentation. Lit by telephone we got a tour along the different sites. This impressive colaboration owed definetely to the guest and spatial expert. It made the concept joined worlds truly come to life .


    this group combined the individueal plans to the theme park: chil Curaço. A little island next to Curacao where all kinds of non stress activities take place.

  • Transportation is by water slide or magic elevator. Connection to CUracao is a 3d printed bridge.

day 4: room for your we

After exchanging impressions we had during the excursion we start with the assignment of the day: design a place for your 'We'. Following up on the analysis and exploration of their own personal groups of friends and relational we ask them to design a place catering to these needs and in keeping with their style. The work will be done individually, but the work will still be done in a group for support and feed back.

  • this is my place

    Some like to chill, others like a working place. Some live in a digital space, others camp. Diversity is key when the students present their designs.

    It is realy nice to see the different ways the students have expressed their ideas. Some are ready to be build, others are more dreamlike.
    The next step will be to connect them all in a collective space, a shared space for more functions and different use.

dag 3: excursion

Thanks to the cooperation of the Capriles Clinic we were able to make this trip to examples of use of public space in Willemstad. Exploring public space, taking notes and registering how you feel. These were the assignments the students and guests got once in the bus. The aim of the excursion is to make students more sensitive to public space.

Every day of the seminar is not only about public space but we try to teach a specific skill as well. Today it was taking notes. Not only using the camera, but also adding text and little drawings. Evverybody took to this with gusto. Allthough the schedule was ambitious, three locations inless than three hours, thanks to the excellent driver we managed to explore them all.

  • Fit for the future

    First stop was the former fitness centre next to the water plant. It proved to be inspirational. Beautifull architecture. Nice views and grafity. Many ideas for future use came to mind..

  • landing

    The abandoned restaurant in an airplane was a surprise to many students. Nice drawing and study material was produced. The site demanded attention for detail....

  • monument &

    Next to the monument for Autonomy (1955) a fascinating area is located. We started with the monument, reading out loud the text on the base: Onafhankelijk maar met de bereidheid elkander bij te staan (our queen in 1942) (independant , but with the willingness to support eachother).

  • skate park

    Behind the skatestore, close to the monument there is a skateramp. Constructed with left over materials.

  • Lindbergh

    In the residential area next to the Monument neighburs have claimed the green area for sitting and sharing meals. The space was inviting and well maintained. It showed how participative planning on a small scale really works.

  • Briem

    Just behind the stores to the right lies the almost rural residential area of Briem. People have build their houses here but don't own the land. The owner apparently has other plans so they must fear eviction.

Day 2: public space for what?

This day is about getting to know the needs and wants and motivation of the 'We' better. Why do they do what they do and what kind of space is needed to express themselves.

And getting to know your own group/team better. What does your 'We' do, need and want to express.

A very concentrated and lively day

  • high flying parks

    There is a typical Curaçao tradition of use of public space in the early seventies: High Flying Parks. Self expression by the young was all the rage. Emancipation thé topic. Something that could be done in style. As shows this fotoshoot from the US magazine Ebony of 1973.

  • still here

    Still now you see the High Flying Parks, Not as fancy as they started out. But there. A great example of self organisation and self expression in the public space. Inspirational for us. Maybe a nice tradition to continue for the students...

Day 1: the 'we' in all of us.

The seminar started off yesterday with a big applaus! After a introduction of Bart en Klaar, a short reading on attitude and a demonstration of what kind of 'we'  groups were formed. Enthusiastically each group brought to paper what they knew ábout 'we' and what the characteristics of their 'we'  are.

Results were presented and home work assignment was given...

the assignment? Smile to everyone you meet.

It's about the question if you belong to a fixed group or that it is possible to invite people to be part of your team.
